This picture above is of Oskar Shindler and all of his workers.
Although Oskar Schindler died at age 66 in 1974, his legacy will continue to live on. He will be remembered for years to come for the 1,200 Jews he has saved during the Holocaust.
Many people know the name Schindler because of Steven Speilberg's movie Schindler's List staring Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.
Oskar opened a factory in Krakow in 1939. He was your typical business man. He wanted nothing but money and cheap labor. Which is exactly what he got with all the Polish and Jewish workers he got. Well, as the days went on and he got closer to his workers, he began to change.
He went from seeing them as workers and as mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, and most importantly as people.
Oskar had convinced some Nazi's that he needed trained people for his factory. His factory produced enamelware and he required trained workers, meaning he couldn't waste time having to train somebody new each day. (In a sense saving them from being killed).
He also had them live closer to his factory so that they could start the day earlier and end the day later, well, that was Oskar's excuse anyways. It was really just another way to keep his workers alive.
I called them his workers, but to him, they were his children.
He let children, adults, and elderly work in his factory. He spent all his money on these people. People in other camps got only 900 calories per day, where people in his camps got 2000 calories per day. Meaning that his Jews were much healthier and lively.
He shows leadership by stepping up and seeing everything that's wrong within Hitler and the Nazi Party, considering he was a form Nazi Member in his prime. He said "If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car, wouldn't you help him?"
This quote makes you sit and think and realize why he did it without needing another else said. Oskar saw something horrific about to happen, so he did what he could to help. Just left you'd help the dog get out of the way, he did that with the Jews. He saved them and they forever remember them as his savior because of it.
